Fasting blood glucose (FBG) refers to the concentration of glucose in a person’s blood after they have not eaten for at least 8 to 12 hours. This measurement is a critical diagnostic tool used primarily to assess an individual’s metabolic health, particularly in the context of diagnosing and managing diabetes mellitus.

Glucose is a simple sugar that serves as a primary energy source for the body’s cells. After consuming food, carbohydrates are broken down into glucose, which enters the bloodstream. Insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas, facilitates the uptake of glucose into cells, where it is used for energy or stored for future use. In a fasting state, the body’s glucose levels are maintained by the liver, which releases stored glucose to keep levels stable.

The fasting blood glucose test is typically performed in the morning after an overnight fast. It is a straightforward procedure where a blood sample is drawn from a vein, usually in the arm, and analyzed in a laboratory. The results are measured in milligrams per deciliter (mg/dL) or millimoles per liter (mmol/L), depending on the region.

Normal fasting blood glucose levels are generally considered to be between 70 and 99 mg/dL (3.9 to 5.5 mmol/L). Levels between 100 and 125 mg/dL (5.6 to 6.9 mmol/L) indicate impaired fasting glucose, also known as prediabetes, which is a risk factor for developing type 2 diabetes. A fasting blood glucose level of 126 mg/dL (7.0 mmol/L) or higher on two separate occasions is indicative of diabetes.

FBG is a crucial component of diabetes screening and management. It helps in identifying individuals at risk of developing diabetes and in monitoring the effectiveness of treatment in those already diagnosed. For people with diabetes, maintaining blood glucose levels within a target range is essential to prevent complications such as cardiovascular disease, neuropathy, retinopathy, and kidney damage.

In addition to diabetes, fasting blood glucose levels can be influenced by various factors, including stress, illness, medications, and hormonal changes. Therefore, healthcare providers consider these factors when interpreting FBG results.
