Tooth decay, also known as dental caries or cavities, is a prevalent oral health condition characterized by the destruction of the tooth’s hard tissues. This process is primarily caused by the acidic by-products of bacterial metabolism. The human mouth is home to a diverse microbiome, including bacteria such as Streptococcus mutans and Lactobacilli, which play a significant role in the development of tooth decay.

The process of tooth decay begins with the formation of dental plaque, a sticky biofilm that adheres to the tooth surface. Plaque is composed of bacteria, food particles, and saliva. When carbohydrates, particularly sugars, are consumed, the bacteria in plaque metabolize these sugars and produce acids as a by-product. These acids can demineralize the enamel, the hard, outer layer of the tooth, leading to the formation of microscopic pores and eventually cavities.

Tooth decay progresses through several stages. Initially, it may manifest as white spots on the enamel, indicating demineralization. If not addressed, the decay can penetrate deeper into the tooth, reaching the dentin, which is the softer layer beneath the enamel. At this stage, the decay can cause sensitivity and pain. If the decay continues unchecked, it can reach the pulp, the innermost part of the tooth containing nerves and blood vessels, potentially leading to severe pain, infection, and even tooth loss.

Several factors contribute to the risk of developing tooth decay. Poor oral hygiene, such as inadequate brushing and flossing, allows plaque to accumulate and persist on the teeth. Dietary habits, particularly frequent consumption of sugary and acidic foods and beverages, can exacerbate the risk. Additionally, a lack of fluoride, a mineral that helps remineralize and strengthen enamel, can increase susceptibility to decay.

Preventing tooth decay involves maintaining good oral hygiene practices, such as brushing teeth at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, flossing daily, and visiting a dentist regularly for check-ups and cleanings. Reducing the intake of sugary snacks and drinks, as well as using dental sealants and fluoride treatments, can also help protect against decay.
